THE CHALLENGE
The A32 is subject to relatively high HGV movements. Unsupported edges and the heavy traffic had led to a deterioration of the pavement structure and associated ride quality.
Hampshire County Council and Milestone Infrastructure engaged with OCL Regeneration to deliver a solution to these issues that was cost-effective, in line with their sustainability policies and ‘Stronger Roads Today’ initiative.
THE SOLUTION
As an established partner on the Hampshire Highways Framework, OCL Regeneration proposed a 100mm planning operation to the haunches which were then extended out and filled with Foamix, a material which utilises aggregate from the Hampshire road network and is supplied cold in line with SHW Cl 948.
An additional 60mm of Foamix and 40mm of HRA was then overlaid across the 14,000M2 site.
THE OUTCOMES
OCL Regeneration’s innovative and circular material enabled the client to achieve the key deliverables of a strengthened pavement and improved ride quality.
The project was successfully delivered within the allotted programme and enabled Hampshire County Council to achieve a 48% cost saving and 50% carbon saving through the reuse of AWCCT (Asphalt Waste Containing Coal Tar).
THE REVIEW
‘During my visits I was impressed with the safety of the site, staff attitudes & the overall quality of the works.
This was delivered at short notice, in some tricky weather & only with the flexibility of the staff changing working hours & great planning were we able to achieve this.’
‘Following the success of this project and the ease of delivery, Hampshire are currently scoping Phase 2 of these works to be delivered to the same specification’
